Lindum is a Roman colonia founded in the late first century AD, established as a legionary fortress before its conversion to a civilian settlement of considerable importance. The site occupies a prominent position above the River Witham in Lincoln and preserves substantial remains of its defensive circuit, notably the Newport Arch, which represents one of the finest surviving Roman gateways in Britain. As a colonia, Lindum held prestigious status within the Roman provincial hierarchy and served as a major administrative and commercial centre throughout the second and third centuries AD. The archaeological record demonstrates continuous occupation through the Roman period, with extensive evidence of stone-built structures, mosaics, and finds indicative of a prosperous urban settlement that maintained considerable influence in the region.
