Overview

History & significance

Llanthony Priory is a Augustinian foundation established in the Vale of Ewyas in Monmouthshire during the early twelfth century, traditionally dated to around 1103 when the Norman knight William de Lacy founded the community. The priory's substantial remains, including the striking west front and nave arcading of the Romanesque church, together with domestic ranges, demonstrate the considerable resources invested in the settlement during the medieval period. The site was abandoned and fell into disrepair following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, yet its architectural fragments preserve evidence of the priory's former prominence as a religious establishment and its important position within the landscape of the Welsh-Norman borderlands.
