Overview

History & significance

Loch Beag na Fuaralachd shielings is a seasonal pastoral settlement located in Sutherland, in the far north of Scotland. The site comprises shieling structures positioned approximately one kilometre south-west of the south-west end of Loch Beag na Fuaralachd, reflecting the transhumant pastoral practices that characterised Highland land use from the medieval period through to the nineteenth century. Shielings served as temporary shelters for herders tending livestock during summer months, and this example is representative of the extensive network of such settlements that supported cattle-herding economies across the Scottish Highlands. The physical remains consist of the characteristic low stone structures typical of shieling sites, evidence of the pastoral economy that sustained Highland communities for several centuries.
