The site dates to the post-medieval period, representing the agricultural land organisation and farming practices of early modern Scotland. The enclosures are visible as earthwork features in the landscape, evidence of the field systems that characterised rural settlement and land use in this part of the Lothians during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.
