Low Mire is a milefortlet forming part of the Roman coastal defence system constructed along the Cumbrian shore during the second century AD. Located approximately fifty metres north of Heather Bank in Cumberland, this small fortification represents one of a series of such installations built to monitor and control maritime traffic and movement along the frontier. The milefortlet would have been garrisoned by a small military detachment and served to supplement the larger forts positioned at strategic intervals. This monument survives as an earthwork feature and remains an important archaeological indicator of Roman military organization and the extent of imperial control projected across Britain's northwestern coastal frontier.
