Martello tower K and its associated battery south west of Walton Mere is a coastal defence structure built during the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century. The tower forms part of the extensive chain of Martello towers constructed along the Essex coast between 1808 and 1812 to defend against potential French invasion. The tower exhibits the characteristic compact cylindrical design typical of these fortifications, with thick walls and a gun platform to command the surrounding landscape and approaches. The associated battery represents the integrated defensive scheme whereby multiple artillery positions worked in concert to protect vulnerable sections of the coastline during this period of heightened military threat.
