Mattersey Priory is a Gilbertine monastery founded in the twelfth century in Nottinghamshire. The site comprises the remains of a monastic precinct that reflects the distinctive architectural and spatial arrangements characteristic of the Gilbertine order, which combined communities of canons and canonesses under a single Rule. The priory's physical remains demonstrate the scale and organisation of a medieval religious community, with surviving structures indicative of the conventual buildings typical of such establishments. Like other Gilbertine houses, Mattersey Priory was suppressed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, leaving behind archaeological evidence of its medieval occupation and function.
