Medieval saltern 800m north of Monkshill Farm is a salt-making installation located on Seasalter Level in Kent, part of a group of six medieval salterns in the area. The site represents the remains of evaporative salt production undertaken during the medieval period, when coastal marshlands such as Seasalter Level were extensively exploited for salt manufacture to meet regional demand for this essential commodity. Salterns of this type typically comprised shallow tanks or ponds where seawater or brackish water was allowed to evaporate, leaving behind crystallised salt that could be harvested and processed. The survival of these monuments on the low-lying marshy terrain of Seasalter Level provides important archaeological evidence for the organisation and location of medieval industrial activity in Kent.
