The medieval settlement and open field system immediately south east of Low Farm is a scheduled ancient monument in Nottinghamshire comprising the earthwork remains of a deserted or shrunken medieval village together with associated ridge and furrow cultivation patterns. The settlement is documented as part of the wider pattern of medieval occupation and agricultural organisation characteristic of the East Midlands region during the twelfth to sixteenth centuries. The surviving earthworks preserve evidence of former tofts and crofts, the domestic and working plots typical of medieval manorial villages, whilst the ridge and furrow features demonstrate the arable farming practices that sustained the community. The site represents a valuable archaeological resource for understanding the organisation of medieval rural society and the processes of settlement change that affected many English villages during the late medieval and early modern periods.
