Melandra Castle is a Roman auxiliary fort located near Glossop in Derbyshire, dating to the late first century AD, probably established around AD 79 during the Flavian campaigns of northern Britain. The fort was constructed to control the strategically important route through the Peak District and to support the Roman advance into the Pennines, serving as a supply base for military operations in the region. The site preserves substantial earthwork remains of the fort's defences, including the characteristic playing-card shape of the fort's plan with its rounded corners, though much of the original stone and timber structures have been lost to later quarrying and cultivation. Archaeological investigation has revealed evidence of occupation extending into the second century AD before the site was eventually abandoned as Roman military priorities shifted northwards.
