The site dates to the medieval period, typical of defended or high-status domestic sites that were common in the English landscape from the twelfth century onwards. The moat survives as a clearly defined earthwork feature, indicating the former presence of a manor house or significant residential structure, whilst the adjacent fishpond demonstrates the economic and dietary resources of the medieval occupants.
