Moated site at Metham Hall Farm is a medieval defensive earthwork located in Yorkshire. The monument comprises a substantial water-filled or formerly water-filled moat enclosing a raised platform, a characteristic form of settlement fortification constructed by landholding families from the twelfth century onwards. Such moated sites served both practical and symbolic functions, providing security and demonstrating the status of their occupants during the medieval period. The site represents an important example of the dispersed pattern of medieval settlement that characterised rural Yorkshire, where numerous smaller fortified homesteads were established alongside larger castles and manorial centres.
