Montacute Castle is a motte and bailey castle situated on St Michael's Hill in Somerset, England. The site comprises a substantial mound surmounted by a stone keep, constructed in the early Norman period following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The castle's strategic location on elevated ground afforded commanding views of the surrounding landscape and the settlement below. Though now ruinous, the surviving earthworks and stonework remain testament to the defensive engineering characteristic of early medieval fortifications in the West Country.
