Montgomery Medieval Town, Part adjacent to Westmead, School Lane is a scheduled ancient monument representing the planned urban settlement that developed around Montgomery Castle from the late twelfth century onwards. The town was established as a Norman plantation town following the construction of the castle, with its layout reflecting the deliberate planning characteristic of medieval urban foundations in the Welsh March. The surviving earthworks and archaeological deposits preserve evidence of the medieval street plan and domestic occupation within the historic town area. The monument is protected under the terms of its Cadw scheduling to preserve the archaeological and historical record of this important example of medieval town development in Wales.
