The motte and bailey castle situated 650 metres north-north-west of Sandpoint Farm is a Norman fortification of the 11th or 12th century. The monument comprises a raised earthwork mound, or motte, accompanied by an associated bailey, typical of the defensive and administrative structures erected by Norman lords following the Conquest of 1066. Such fortifications served as centres of local authority and military control during the early Norman period, when timber or stone structures would have crowned the motte to provide command of the surrounding landscape. The site remains visible as an earthwork monument, preserving evidence of Norman settlement patterns and feudal land control in Somerset.
