The site consists of the typical two-part design comprising an elevated mound (the motte) crowned with a wooden or stone fortification, accompanied by an adjacent bailey or outer defensive enclosure. Dating to the medieval period, structures of this type were prevalent in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries across Ireland following Norman settlement and colonisation. The monument represents an important example of early Norman military architecture in the Ulster region.
