Motte Castle is a motte-and-bailey earthwork located approximately 57 metres south-west of the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Gloucestershire. The monument consists of a substantial mound typical of Norman fortifications, dating to the medieval period following the Norman Conquest. The site preserves the characteristic defensive earthworks of early Norman settlement and control in the region, with the motte forming the primary defensive feature of this castle site. Such fortifications were common in Gloucestershire during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, serving both military and administrative functions for Norman lords establishing authority over conquered territory.
