Overview

History & significance

Motte is a medieval motte castle located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The site consists of an earthen mound characteristic of Norman and Anglo-Norman fortifications constructed during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, representing the military architecture favoured by settlers in medieval Ulster. The motte would originally have supported a timber palisade and defensive structures on its summit, with an associated bailey or outer enclosure typical of this fortification type. Such mottes formed part of the defensive network established during the Anglo-Norman colonisation of Ireland, though many fell into disuse as stone castles became the preferred form of military architecture in subsequent centuries.
