Motte & possible bailey is a medieval motte situated in Ards, County Down, Northern Ireland. The monument consists of an earthen mound characteristic of Norman defensive architecture of the twelfth century, with indications of an associated bailey enclosure, though the latter requires further archaeological confirmation. Such mottes formed part of the rapid expansion of Anglo-Norman settlement and fortification across Ireland following the late twelfth-century invasion, serving as administrative and defensive centres for newly established lordships. The site's survival as an upstanding earthwork preserves important evidence of the early medieval military and settlement landscape of the Ards peninsula.
