Overview

History & significance

Movanagher Castle is a post-medieval plantation settlement in the parish of Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The site comprises a castle, bawn and associated village remains dating from the early modern period when English and Scottish settlers established fortified homesteads throughout Ulster under the Plantation scheme. The defensive bawn, a characteristic feature of plantation-era settlements, would have enclosed the castle and provided protection for both the dwelling and dependent farmsteads. The archaeological remains represent a significant example of the material culture of early modern colonisation in Ireland, documenting the built environment created by planter communities during the seventeenth century.
