Muchelney Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in the tenth century on the Isle of Athelney in Somerset, established as a daughter house to Athelney Abbey. The surviving remains, principally from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, include the abbot's lodging with its fine late medieval architecture, fragments of the conventual buildings, and sections of the precinct walls that define the monastic layout. The abbey was dissolved during the English Reformation in 1538 and subsequently fell into ruin, with the site passing through various private hands until becoming an archaeological monument. The standing structures and excavated foundations preserve important evidence of late medieval monastic life and administrative practice in the West Country.
