Muness Castle is a 16th-century fortified residence located on the island of Unst in Shetland, constructed in 1598 by Laurence Bruce, a relative of the Earl of Orkney and Shetland. The castle exemplifies the Z-plan design typical of late medieval Scottish tower houses, with a main rectangular block flanked by diagonally opposed corner towers that provided enhanced defensive capabilities and improved sightlines.
