New Battery and High Down Test Site, The Needles is a scheduled ancient monument comprising fortifications and experimental military installations located on the Isle of Wight near The Needles headland. The site encompasses defensive works dating from the Napoleonic Wars period, when battery fortifications were constructed to protect the strategically important waters off the western tip of the Isle of Wight. The monument also includes evidence of twentieth-century military testing and experimental work conducted on the site. The physical remains reflect successive phases of military use spanning from the early nineteenth century through the Cold War era.
