Oakwood Roman Fort and Camp is a Roman military installation situated in Selkirkshire, south-eastern Scotland, south-south-east of the settlement from which it takes its name. The fort occupies a strategic position in the Borders region, an area of considerable military importance during the Roman occupation of Britain. Built upon bedrock of Hawick Group wacke formed during the Wenlock period, the underlying geology provided a stable foundation for the fort's construction.
The site preserves evidence of both a fort and an associated temporary camp, representing different phases of Roman military activity in the locality. The wacke bedrock, characteristic of the Southern Uplands, would have presented substantial challenges for Roman engineers, yet the fort's positioning demonstrates careful site selection in this upland landscape.
