Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late eighth century, forming a substantial frontier defence along the Anglo-Welsh border. This section of the dyke east of Stowfield Farm in Gloucestershire comprises a substantial bank and ditch, typical of the monument's physical character where it survives as an upstanding archaeological feature. The dyke extends for approximately 177 kilometres from the Dee estuary in the north to the Severn estuary in the south, representing one of the most significant engineering undertakings of the Anglo-Saxon period. This particular stretch remains an important archaeological indicator of territorial control and the political geography of the late Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.
