Overview

History & significance

Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork of eighth-century date constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia (757–796), forming a frontier barrier between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. This section, situated east of Stowfield Farm in Gloucestershire, comprises an upstanding bank and ditch typical of the monument's construction, where the earthwork was built up from material quarried from a parallel ditch cut to its western side. The dyke extends for approximately 240 kilometres along the Anglo-Welsh border, of which this Gloucestershire stretch represents one of the southern sections of significant survival. The monument survives as a prominent landscape feature and constitutes an important record of early medieval territorial definition and the political geography of eighth-century Britain.
