Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork monument constructed during the late eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia, forming a substantial boundary defence between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom and Welsh territories. This section, located west of Pottery Cottages in Shropshire, comprises a prominent bank and ditch structure characteristic of the monument's construction along the Welsh border. The earthwork survives as a significant topographical feature demonstrating the engineering capability and political authority of the Mercian kingdom at its height. The site remains one of the best-preserved stretches of this extensive linear monument, which stretches approximately 149 miles from the Dee estuary to the Severn estuary.
