Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork monument constructed in the late eighth century, traditionally attributed to King Offa of Mercia, and forming part of the frontier defence system between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and Wales. This section, located west of Pottery Cottages in Shropshire, preserves a substantial bank and ditch characteristic of the monument's construction, which typically comprised an upcast bank fronted by a ditch on the Welsh side. The dyke represents one of the most significant engineering projects of the Anglo-Saxon period, extending approximately 240 kilometres along the Welsh border. This particular stretch remains visible as an upstanding earthwork, demonstrating the substantial labour investment and territorial ambitions of eighth-century Mercia.
