Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork of eighth-century date constructed under the direction of King Offa of Mercia, likely between approximately 757 and 796 AD. This section north east of Middle Knuck Farm in Shropshire forms part of the most substantial and well-preserved stretch of the dyke, which extends for approximately 80 kilometres along the England-Wales border. The monument consists of a substantial bank with an associated ditch, characteristic of Offa's Dyke throughout its course, and represents one of the most significant surviving examples of Anglo-Saxon frontier construction. The dyke's precise defensive or territorial function remains debated among scholars, though it clearly marked a significant political and economic boundary between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and Welsh principalities.
