Overview

History & significance

Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork defence constructed during the late eighth century, traditionally attributed to King Offa of Mercia (757–796), to demarcate and fortify the border between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. The section northeast of Nether Skyborry in Shropshire forms part of the longer monument which extends for approximately 149 kilometres from the Severn estuary in the south to the Dee estuary in the north. This particular stretch comprises a substantial bank and ditch formation typical of the dyke's construction, with the bank rising prominently from a recessed ditch, representing a significant feat of early medieval engineering. The monument remains archaeologically important as evidence of eighth-century territorial assertion and the management of cross-border relations during the Anglo-Saxon period.
