Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork dating to the later eighth century, constructed under the direction of King Offa of Mercia as a boundary demarcation between Welsh and English territories. The section preserved in Danehill Wood, 300 metres west of East Vaga in Gloucestershire, survives as a substantial bank and ditch monument typical of the dyke's construction across the Welsh borderland. At this location the earthwork maintains its characteristic form, comprising an upcast bank fronted by an external ditch, evidence of the considerable labour investment required for its construction. The monument represents a significant phase of Anglo-Saxon territorial organisation and remains one of the most substantial linear earthworks of the period in Britain.
