Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed during the late eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia to mark and defend the boundary between his kingdom and the Welsh territories to the west. This section northwest of Holme Marsh in Herefordshire extends for approximately 615 yards (560 metres) between Holme Marsh and the railway line, and represents a substantial surviving portion of the monument's characteristic form comprising a prominent bank and accompanying ditch. The earthwork demonstrates the engineering capability of the Mercian state and served as both a territorial demarcation and a physical barrier to movement between England and Wales. The section remains archaeologically significant as evidence of late Saxon frontier fortification and administrative boundary marking.
