Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork that forms part of the longer defensive frontier constructed under the direction of King Offa of Mercia during the late eighth century. The section on St Briavels Common, located approximately 400 metres east of Yewgreen Farm, comprises a substantial bank and ditch that survives as a prominent landscape feature across the Gloucestershire-Monmouthshire border. This portion of the dyke demonstrates the characteristic engineering typical of the monument, with the bank facing the Welsh side, and represents an important surviving example of the extensive frontier works that stretched for over 150 kilometres during the Anglo-Saxon period. The earthwork remains a significant archaeological and historical witness to the territorial assertions and military architecture of eighth-century England.
