Offa's Dyke on St Briavels Common is a section of the linear earthwork constructed in the late eighth century, traditionally attributed to King Offa of Mercia, as a boundary demarcation between English and Welsh territories. The monument consists of a substantial bank and ditch, characteristic of the dyke's construction method across its entire length of approximately 177 kilometres, and remains prominently visible in this location immediately west of The Fields. The earthwork demonstrates the engineering sophistication of Mercian frontier defence during the Anglo-Saxon period and represents one of the most substantial linear monuments surviving from that era in Britain. This particular section retains good archaeological visibility and contributes to our understanding of the dyke's course and original form across Gloucestershire.
