Old Carlisle is a Roman fort and civil settlement situated near the village of Great Salkeld in Cumbria, positioned on the Stanegate road which connected the military installations of northern Britain during the second and third centuries AD. The site, known in antiquity as Olerica, served as an auxiliary fort housing infantry and cavalry units and became the focus of significant civilian settlement outside its defences. Archaeological investigation has revealed evidence of occupation spanning the second and early third centuries, with structural remains and finds indicating the presence of barracks, administrative buildings, and extramural settlement characteristic of Romano-British frontier forts. The monument survives as an earthwork monument with substantial visible ramparts and ditches which define the fort's rectangular plan, remaining one of the more substantial upstanding Roman fortifications visible in the Stanegate system.
