The site preserves substantial archaeological deposits including structural elements and artefacts that document the development of this important provincial town, which served as a significant military and civilian centre in the south-west of Roman Britain. The survival of well-stratified deposits beneath the cathedral precinct has provided crucial evidence for understanding the topography, chronology and function of the Roman settlement.
