Penchrise Pen is a hillfort of Iron Age date situated in Roxburghshire, south-east Scotland, 635 metres south-west of Penchrise Farm Cottage. The fort occupies a defensible position on high ground underlain by a Carboniferous to Permian igneous intrusion of felsic composition, which would have provided a naturally resistant foundation for its ramparts and outworks. The landscape of this border region, lying within sight of the Cheviot Hills, presented both opportunity and necessity for fortified settlements during the Iron Age.
The fort's construction exploited the local geology to create a stronghold typical of the period. Felsic igneous rock—composed primarily of silica-rich minerals—would have offered good building stone and would have been naturally exposed or easily accessible across the hilltop, allowing the Iron Age inhabitants to construct substantial defensive works without transporting materials over long distances.
Penchrise Pen is protected under Historic Environment Scotland's designation SM2296, recognising its archaeological importance as evidence of Iron Age settlement patterns and territorial organisation in the Scottish Borders.
