Penralltddu Defended Enclosure is a prehistoric promontory fort situated on an inland location in Wales. The fort is constructed on bedrock composed of Ashgill Rocks—undifferentiated mudstone, siltstone and sandstone deposits laid down during the Ashgill geological period. This mixed lithology would have offered both challenges and advantages to the Iron Age inhabitants: the softer sedimentary rocks could be worked to create ditches and ramparts, whilst the more resistant bands would have provided stable platforms for defensive structures and occupation areas.
Promontory forts of this type typically utilised natural topography to reduce the length of defensive works required, creating substantial earthworks across the narrowest point of access. At Penralltddu, the geological substrate and landscape configuration created an effective stronghold. The site represents evidence of organised settlement and territorial control during the later prehistoric period, reflecting the social structures and concerns of its builders.
