Cromwell's Citadel is a seventeenth-century military fortification located in Perth, Perthshire, constructed during the Commonwealth period following the English Civil War. Built between 1651 and 1653 under the direction of General George Monck, the citadel served as a strategic garrison to control Perth and secure English military dominance in Scotland following Cromwell's conquest. The fortress was designed in the contemporary star fort style, featuring angled bastions characteristic of early modern military engineering. Though substantially demolished in the eighteenth century, archaeological and structural remains attest to its original significance as one of the most important military installations in post-Civil War Scotland.
