Peterborough Cathedral Precincts is a monastic complex in Northamptonshire centred on the cathedral itself, which originated as a Benedictine abbey founded in the seventh century and was substantially rebuilt during the Romanesque period from the twelfth century onwards. The precincts contain substantial medieval monastic buildings including the Table Hall and Infirmary Arcade, which represent the domestic and healthcare infrastructure of the monastery and date primarily to the medieval period. The Table Hall functioned as a communal dining space for the monastic community, whilst the Infirmary Arcade provided sheltered access to the infirmary where sick and elderly monks received care. These structures, along with other surviving monastic buildings within the precincts, demonstrate the complex spatial organisation of a major medieval Benedictine monastery and remain significant evidence of monastic life and architecture in medieval England.
