History & significance

Plumbley Colliery is a nineteenth-century coal mining site situated approximately 600 metres north-east of Roundhill Cottages in Derbyshire. The colliery is notable for the survival of the Seldom Seen engine house, a substantial stone structure that served the pumping and winding operations essential to extracting coal from the underground seams. The engine house represents the industrial infrastructure typical of Derbyshire's coalfield development during the nineteenth century, when steam-powered machinery became fundamental to deep mining operations. The site retains archaeological significance as evidence of the region's intensive exploitation of coal reserves and the technological systems that supported Victorian-era mineral extraction.
