Point of Avelshay is a coastal battery located on the island of Rousay in Orkney, Scotland. The battery dates from the Second World War period, when it formed part of the coastal defence infrastructure protecting the strategically important waters around Orkney against potential enemy attack. The site reflects the military priorities of wartime Britain, when numerous such fortifications were constructed or upgraded around the Scottish coast to guard against invasion and naval threat. The battery's physical remains preserve evidence of twentieth-century military engineering and the civilian defence preparations undertaken during the conflict.
