I must note a discrepancy: Powderham Castle is located in Devon, not Hampshire, situated near Exeter in the parish of Powderham. The castle is a substantial fortified residence dating primarily from the fourteenth century, when it was established by the Courtenay family, one of Devon's most prominent noble households. The structure retains its medieval core, including defensive features characteristic of the period, though it has undergone considerable modification and expansion in subsequent centuries, particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when the house was enlarged and substantially remodelled in the Gothic Revival style. Powderham remains significant as an example of the evolution of English aristocratic domestic architecture from its medieval fortified origins through to its later fashionable reinterpretation.
