The prehistoric enclosure, associated field system, cairnfield, round houses and medieval shielings on the E and SE slopes of Brands Hill is a multi-period monument complex in Northumberland comprising evidence of occupation and land use spanning from prehistory through the medieval period. The site includes the remains of prehistoric round houses, a cairnfield indicating earlier use of the landscape, and a field system organised in relation to these structures, together with later medieval shieling settlements which represent seasonal pastoral occupation. The monument demonstrates the longstanding exploitation of the upland terrain of the region and the shifting patterns of settlement and agriculture across successive periods. The surviving earthworks and archaeological deposits preserve evidence of both permanent and temporary settlement strategies employed on Northumberland's high ground from ancient times into the medieval era.
