Castlesteads is a promontory fort located on the east bank of the River Irwell, approximately 550 metres south-south-east of Banks Farm in Lancashire. The site occupies a naturally defensible position formed by the river's meanders, which would have provided substantial natural protection to settlement or refuge on the promontory. The fort is of Iron Age date, representing a significant example of prehistoric fortified settlement in the North West of England. The monument survives as an earthwork, though modern land use has affected its preservation and visibility.
