Castlesteads is a promontory fort situated on the east bank of the Irwell in Lancashire, positioned approximately 550 metres south-south-east of Banks Farm. The monument consists of a defensive earthwork utilising the natural topography of the promontory, with its vulnerable landward side protected by substantial banks and ditches that cut across the spur. The site dates to the Iron Age, representing an important example of prehistoric defensive settlement in the region. The fort's strategic location overlooking the river valley would have provided both defensive advantage and control over movement along the Irwell corridor.
