Red Castle is a thirteenth-century castle situated on a rocky promontory in Lunan Bay, Angus, in the east of Scotland. The castle consists of a substantial stone keep with curtain walling, representing a significant example of medieval Scottish military architecture from the High Medieval period. Built to command the coastal approaches and harbour facilities of Lunan Bay, it served defensive and administrative functions for the lordship of the area. The monument remains an important archaeological site documenting the development of castle-building in medieval Scotland and the strategic importance of the Angus coastline during the medieval period.
