Rey Cross is a Roman temporary camp and signal station located in the North Pennines in Yorkshire, England. The site comprises the earthwork remains of a Roman marching camp, likely dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD and associated with military campaigns in northern Britain, together with a prehistoric stone circle whose construction predates the Roman occupation by many centuries. The camp's physical remains consist of defensive ditches and banks characteristic of Roman temporary fortifications, whilst the stone circle represents a significant prehistoric ritual or ceremonial monument. The combined presence of these two distinct periods of use makes Rey Cross an important palimpsest of human activity spanning from the Bronze Age through the Roman imperial period.
