Overview

History & significance

Lavatrae is a Roman auxiliary fort located near Bowes in County Durham (historically part of Yorkshire), which guarded the Stainmore Pass along the Stanegate road in the northern frontier zone of Roman Britain. The fort was established in the early second century AD and remained in use through the third and fourth centuries, serving as a strategic military installation to control movement across the Pennines and protect communication routes. The site preserves substantial earthwork remains, including the characteristic playing-card plan of a Roman fort with defensive ditches and ramparts still visible in the landscape. Archaeological investigation and surface evidence indicate the fort accommodated an auxiliary cohort and supported the Roman military infrastructure during the occupation of northern Britain.
