The monument represents part of a significant communication route of the Roman period, dating from the first to fourth centuries AD, which would have facilitated military and commercial movement across the region. The surviving earthwork displays the characteristic raised form typical of Roman road construction, where the agger or metalled surface was built up above the surrounding ground level.
