The round barrow cemetery immediately south-east of Maiden Castle is a Bronze Age burial ground positioned in close spatial and chronological relation to one of southern England's most significant Iron Age hillforts. The cemetery comprises multiple burial mounds characteristic of Bronze Age funerary practice, dating to the second millennium BC, which considerably predate the later Iron Age occupation and development of Maiden Castle itself. This spatial clustering of Bronze Age barrows in proximity to the later hillfort demonstrates the long continuity of use and significance of this landscape across distinct prehistoric periods. The barrows represent an important archaeological resource for understanding Bronze Age mortuary practices and settlement patterns in the Dorset landscape.
