Royal Military Canal is a defensive earthwork constructed during the Napoleonic Wars, specifically built between 1804 and 1807 as part of Britain's coastal fortifications against the threat of French invasion. The canal section from Twiss Road Bridge to Seabrook Lodge Bridge in Kent represents a substantial portion of this linear defensive system, which extends for approximately 28 miles across the Romney Marsh and Walland Marsh areas. The canal itself comprises a water-filled ditch with an accompanying towpath, designed to form a significant obstacle to potential invaders whilst also serving practical purposes for transport and drainage. This heritage monument survives as an important example of Regency-period military engineering and remains substantially intact along much of its designated length, retaining its original form as a key component of the Napoleonic defences established to protect the Kent and Sussex coastline.
