The Royal Military Canal is a defensive waterway constructed between 1804 and 1809 along the Kent coast in response to the threat of Napoleonic invasion. The section from Twiss Road Bridge to Seabrook Lodge Bridge represents part of this strategically important fortification, which extended for approximately twenty-eight miles across Romney Marsh and the surrounding low-lying terrain. The canal was designed to create a barrier against potential amphibious attack and to facilitate the movement of troops and military supplies along the threatened southern coast. Built as a substantial earthwork with associated military infrastructure, the Royal Military Canal survives as a significant monument to early nineteenth-century defence strategy and remains a notable landscape feature of the Kent coastal region.
