The Royal Military Canal is a defensive earthwork constructed during the Napoleonic Wars, specifically between 1804 and 1809, as a precautionary measure against potential French invasion. This section of the canal, extending from Wickham Cliff to Strand Bridge near Winchelsea in East Sussex, forms part of the larger fortification system designed to protect the vulnerable Romney Marsh and coastal regions. The canal comprises a substantial ditch with accompanying rampart, engineered to create an obstacle that would hinder military advancement whilst allowing rapid troop movement along its length. Though ultimately never tested in combat, the Royal Military Canal survives as a notable example of early nineteenth-century military engineering and remains a prominent landscape feature traversing the Romney Marsh area.
