The Royal Military Canal is a defensive waterway constructed during the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century, specifically engineered to protect the vulnerable coastline of southeast England against the threat of French invasion. The section between Wickham Cliff and Strand Bridge at Winchelsea forms part of this strategically important fortification, which extends for approximately thirty miles across Romney Marsh and surrounding low-lying terrain. The canal features the characteristic design of its period, with earthen banks and a water-filled ditch serving as a physical barrier to impede amphibious assault, and it was supported by a chain of associated military structures and gun emplacements. Though the immediate invasion threat dissipated following Napoleon's defeat, the Royal Military Canal survives as a substantial and legible monument to early nineteenth-century military engineering and the anxieties of the Napoleonic era.
